Inspirational Computer Programming Video Now Accessible for the Blind

An inspiring video encouraging young people to learn computing programming is now accessible to blind students, thanks to a collaboration between non-profit code.org and UW's AccessComputing project. The video features celebrities including Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg, as well as popular musicians and athletes. It was adapted for blind students by adding audio description, a separate audio track that narrates key visual information such as the names of the speakers, and is available on YouTube

UW SkyDrivePro Is Now “UW OneDrive for Business”

UW SkyDrive Pro has been renamed UW OneDrive for Business to align with Microsoft’s rebranding of this online service for the UW community that offers file storage, collaboration and communication. If you’ve used UW SkyDrive Pro, all of your files are available on UW OneDrive for Business. Just sign in as usual.

Free UW Data Visualization Workshops for Faculty and Staff

UW faculty and staff can sign up for two free workshops on Tableau software, the UW’s enterprise data visualization platform, and learn how data can be displayed using this powerful data visualization tool. To see the possibilities, sign up for the two-hour Tableau Hands-on Introduction workshop. Then, with that background, register for the full-day hands-on Tableau Desktop Fundamentals class to learn the basic skills of creating data visualizations, including maps and geocoding. Both are offered twice a month.

Move Your UW Course From Catalyst CommonView to Canvas

UW Instructors and their support staff can now move course content—rich text, files, links and images—from Catalyst CommonView to Canvas, the UW’s learning management system. Export CommonView content with one click, then import the saved file from within Canvas. This new functionality streamlines and simplifies the process of moving course management from Catalyst to Canvas.

E-RESOURCE: Bizminer Financial Information

Access financial and market trend information such as average annual sales, profitability and turnover ratios for thousands of industries, from cattle ranching and coal mining to health care, performing arts and more with Bizminer. Brought to you by UW Libraries, Bizminer lets you produce customized reports based on a specific geographic area such as dairy cattle and milk production in Washington state. Data is compiled from multiple sources including the IRS, US Census and the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Technology Services and Equipment Billing for UW is Moving to Modern System

Beginning with a pilot customer group in March, UW-IT will move a subset of its Technology Services and Equipment (TSE) billing to Microsoft Dynamics AX. The move will bring new efficiencies to TSE billing by linking directly to the UW Budget Index, resulting in more timely and accurate billing information. See UW-IT’s how-to help documentation for details. Billing for central IT services through Dynamics AX will expand to all UW units by June; more communications will be forthcoming.

MediaAMP Offers Better Support for Online Courses

MediaAMP, the UW’s cloud service for automating the management, storage and distribution of digital media, now offers even better support for online courses by working with UW lecture capture tools, the Canvas learning management system and UW NetIDs. UW Libraries is using MediaAMP to make its large video library of course reserves available for all three campuses, with UW NetID integration in the media player enabling restriction by course. Other UW academic units are turning to MediaAMP to manage their large collections of pre-recorded content that support online courses. MediaAMP provides FERPA and HIPAA compliance and now offers more detailed reporting and analytics.
