Safety Officers

What is a Safety Officer?

Safety Officers are club members who are responsible for all safety-related issues for their own club. They are responsible for:

  • Ensuring that all club members have submitted a Waiver/Agreement to participate.
  • Restocking the club’s First Aid kit when necessary (if club does not practice inside the IMA) and ensuring it is present at all practices and events. The Club Sports Office has basic and limited supplies to help restock Club First Aid kits, but most first aid items are the Club’s responsibility.
  • Being First Aid/CPR/AED-certified.  Currently, UW Recreation is establishing a system to get all clubs’ safety officers trained and certified.  Until that system is in place, the certification will not be mandatory, but still encouraged.
  • Being aware of the Club Sports Emergency Protocols (pdf) and filling out an Accident/Injury/Incident Report should an injury/incident occur. A copy of the Emergency Protocols should be kept in the club’s First Aid Kit and should be present at all practices and events.  It is the responsibility of all Safety Officers to report accidents/injuries to the Club Sports Office by submitting the proper form.  Failure to do so in a timely manner may result in sanctions against the Club.
  • Showing up. Every club must have at least one safety officer present at every club practice and event.
Requirements

Each club must have a minimum of one safety officer (two recommended) present at every club practice and event.  Failure to adhere to Safety Officer requirements may lead to sanctions for the club.

How do I become a Safety Officer?

1.  Fill out a Safety Officer Agreement.

2.  Complete the Concussion Education Module.

3.  If you are not First Aid/CPR/AED certified, the Club Sports Program will soon be able to provide enrollment in a class at no charge.  The Club Sports Coordinator will communicate the timeline for that system as it develops.  If you are already certified, email a scanned copy of your CPR/First Aid/AED certification when you have completed the quiz to the Club Sports Office. If you have a physical copy of your certification, feel free to drop by the office and we will make a copy for our records.

Once you have completed these steps you are officially a club safety officer.  Check your club roster for a list of club safety officers.
