Mindfulness

170512-RSP-Mindfulness-Sushi-Rolling-018Overview

“Yoga and meditation have brought me balance, physical strength through the poses, and mental strength through the tools mindfulness has given me.”

UW Recreation offers mindfulness classes, workshops, and special events rooted in the science and art of yoga and meditation. Through skillful guidance, participants discover ways to nurture their body and mind and experience more moments of reflection, clarity, empowerment and connection in their daily lives.

Physically:

  • Classes are crafted in varying intensities to encourage diverse spinal motion, strength building, increased flexibility, buffered immunity and overall bodily wellbeing.
  • Yoga is an amazing complement to any athletic program, it can be utilized as a cross-training tool, and can help prevent injury or promote repair.

Mentally:

  • Classes are designed to increase attention span, amplify focus, build resiliency to stress, and promote empathy.
  • Mindfulness practices infused both into yoga and meditation enact shifts in parts of the brain such as the amygdala, prefrontal cortex, and cortical midline structures, which reduce reactivity and encourage more skillful decision making.

Our classes are open to everyone regardless of yoga/meditation experience, flexibility, or current fitness level.

Get your fix of mindfulness either through our Mindfulness Pass (formally UW Mindfulness Project, a program started by students to increase awareness and tools in coping with the growing mental health crisis facing college students), which gives access to unlimited weekly mindfulness classes throughout campus (HUB, Ethnic Cultural Center, Hutchinson Hall, Hillel, Intellectual House, Startup Hall located in Condon Hall), or through Mind/Body programming at the IMA  (check the online course catalog for more specific class information).

*All mindfulness pass classes are open to faculty/staff for autumn quarter.
