Fitness Instructor Training (F.I.T.) Program

New in 2017, we are holding two rounds of Fitness Instructor Auditions! Additionally, we are hosting a Fitness Instructor Audition Prep Course before each audition.  See below for more details…

Overview

UW Recreation’s Fitness Instructor Training (F.I.T.) program prepares students to lead group fitness classes on campus. Students learn the fundamentals of anatomy, exercise science and group fitness instruction in a structured and supportive setting. Students also gain experience in public speaking, group leadership, and professional conduct. Students in a wide variety of academic majors have been successful in the F.I.T. program.

The F.I.T. program has a selective admissions process consisting of an application submission including résumé and cover letter (see below for form), an audition, and an interview. Auditions are held annually. The next round of auditions will be held on Sunday, November 5 @ 11:30am-2:30pm and Saturday, December 9 @ 9:30am-12:30pm. Individuals that submit their applications prior to Sunday, November 5 will audition on Sunday, November 5. Individuals that submit their applications after Sunday, November 5 will audition on Saturday, December 9. Additionally, individuals that participated in the Sunday, November 5 auditions that were not selected for the next round of evaluation (an in-person interview) will be invited to audition again on Saturday, December 9.

Each audition day will feature a brief program overview, introduction of current staff/instructors and instructor candidates, as well as three mini-classes (each 30 minutes in length). Instructor candidates will be evaluated on public speaking ability, movement quality, and energy. New this year, instructor candidates will have the opportunity to participate in our Fitness Instructor Audition Prep Course. This four-week class will meet twice weekly to prepare you for your audition day. You will work with fitness staff and instructors to learn, first-hand, what you will be evaluated on in your audition. You’ll also receive positive and constructive feedback to help you grow and succeed. Please note participation in the Fitness Instructor Audition Prep Course is not mandatory to participate in either of the auditions; although it may be recommended after the first audition prior to the second audition on Saturday, December 9.

After each of the auditions, select instructor candidates will be invited to participate in an in-person interview. After the interview round, select instructor candidates will be invited to participate in the next round of Fitness Instructor Training, beginning Winter Quarter 2018.

The program is a commitment of approximately 5-10 classroom/practice/study hours per week for two academic quarters, typically Winter and Spring. Those who successfully complete both quarters of preparation may begin teaching for UW Recreation the following Summer Quarter. Pay starts at $17 per hour.

While group exercise participation experience is highly encouraged, no teaching experience is necessary. New instructors teach Core Conditioning, ABSolute Conditioning, Cardio Kickboxing, and Total Toning, so the best way to prepare for auditions is to take these (or similar) classes and/or the Fitness Instructor Audition Prep Course. Check out the bios of current instructors here. If you’re interested in getting more information or if you have questions, contact Jessica Norman, Fitness Coordinator, at jlnorman@uw.edu or 206-543-1717.
