I’ve always been a Husky. I look back at pictures of me when I was 3, and lo and behold, there I am in a Husky sweatshirt. To this day, I continue to don my Husky gear, and when I’m 105, with 10 more years to live, I will continue to wear the Purple and Gold.
I was raised in Vancouver, WA, and despite having always lived in the Pacific Northwest, I’ve traveled to more than
15 countries. I travel because I am always wanting to learn. And I attribute this characteristic to my experiences at UW. UW’s mission statement is “Discovery is at the heart of this University,” and I have incorporated this philosophy into my academic and extracurricular experiences. Since I stepped foot on campus in 2005, I’ve been involved in the gamut of activities, from student government to the Greek community, athletics and clubs, study abroad to working on campus. Perhaps that’s because I’m a first-generation college student, appreciative of the opportunities that no one in my family has had.
In addition to taking in these experiences, I’m leaving some legacies. Particularly, I leave a legacy in my work, such as Dawg Daze, a program I have coordinated two years, and in my accomplishments, such as being chosen the 2009 Homecoming King. But, as a never-ending learner, I will continue to be invested in this university. Read more

Our statewide tour ended late February. Thanks to everyone who helped make it happen! We hope the high school students who came to the tour stops were inspired to pursue their dreams.
Here are a few recent articles mentioning the Husky Promise.

School has always been a challenge for me. I started homeschooling during high school, and this created a lot of stress for me as I thought I would never graduate on time or with a decent education. Homeschool didn’t provide me the level of instruction or access to assistance from my peers as high school would have. So I felt like I didn’t have as strong as a foundation as others did. I started to give up hope.
I began attending community college soon after earning my high school diploma and worked very hard to teach myself the materials I knew I would need if I wanted to transfer to a university later on. I didn’t know what I wanted to study, but I knew I wanted to go to a four-year institution somewhere in the Pacific Northwest since my family was living there. After earning my associate’s degree, I never thought I would be able to go to any university, let alone the University of Washington. Still, I was determined to get in; I wanted all those years of working my way through school to pay off. I chose the University of Washington because of its history and location and the programs it offers.
“Every day my kids ask me, “What are we doing today Mom?” I think about it a lot and love to share ideas with other moms as a blogger. I look for things that allow my children to learn in different ways and make the most of each day. Every day as a mom I also think about the future. I wonder what kind of world my kids will have when they grow up, what they will do with their lives and what I can do today to insure their success in the future.
A university education for my children is a high priority for me. I’m sure most parents share this dream. This is why I love the Husky Promise program. If children living in Washington state work hard, learn and get accepted at the University of Washington, they are guaranteed tuition will be met, if they and their parents are unable to provide it.
