A crisp-foliaged Water Oak is in front of Balmer Hall, looming above a yoshino cherry, surrounded by asphalt in a heavily trafficked area. Despite its compacted root system, this tree appears the picture of strength and is as handsome as can be. From the southeastern U.S., it is semi-evergreen, and has leaves shinier on their undersides than above. Campus specimens of water oak ripen virtually no acorns, which has led to speculation that these trees are hybrids. Be that as it may, at least one parent would have been a water oak.
