14. Pin Oak

(Quercus palustris)

Stevens Way and the nearby vicinity has 19 Pin Oaks and 2 Black Oaks (Quercus velutina). Both species are from the eastern U.S., bear sharply lobed leaves, and are strong, undemanding urban shade trees. Pin oak is often preferred, with more deeply lobed leaves, easier to transplant, producing smaller acorns and prettier fall color. The name "pin" refers to plentiful slender twigs, which end up ultimately as pinlike knots in the wood. More of the 24 oak species on campus are Cork Oak, Red Oak, Water Oak, Bur Oak, Shumard Red Oak and Oregon White Oak. [Pin
