Exploration Seminar in Guatemala
2006 UW Recognition Award Winner Angelina Godoy
Dr. Godoy received the James D. Clowes Award for the Advancement of Learning Communities, which recognizes a faculty or staff member who transforms undergraduate learning by creating or sustaining learning communities among students.
"This [Exploration] seminar immerses students in the realities of human
rights as it is experienced "on the ground" in Guatemala, exploring the
issues human rights advocates, scholars, and policymakers face addressing
past atrocities while adapting to respond to new challenges. Students
examine the ways in which Guatemalans have organized, often despite overwhelming
odds, to defend their rights and pursue justice in a post-genocidal context.
The class seeks to learn from the examples and experiences of those on
the front lines of contemporary human rights challenges, and to think
critically about our own role in global structures of justice and injustice."
