Cervantes Institute

The new Cervantes Center at the University of Washington was dedicated on March 8, 2007. The dignitaries participating included Edwardo Lago, director of the Cervantes Center in New York; Juan Pedro de Basterrechea, director of development of the Cervantes Institute in Madrid, Spain; Bill Gates Sr.; Lt. Gov. Brad Owen; UW President Mark Emmert; Luis Fernando Esteban, Spain's vice consul in Washington state; Tony Geist, chairman of the Division of Spanish and Portuguese Studies; and Jose Ignacio Callen, director of the UW Cervantes Institute.

The group also visited Olympia and spoke to the house as guests of the lieutenant governor, who, along with Tony Geist, Bill Gates Sr. and Luis Fernando Esteban, visited with Cervantes Institute officials in Spain several years ago.

The center, sponsored by the Spanish government and the Univeristy of Washington, will offer both linguistic training and cultural offerings for both the University and the Seattle region. There are Aula Cervantes in more than 30 countries, and the UW's is just one of four in the United States.
