Suzzallo Library

Pictorial History Previous Next
This breathtaking view of Mt. Rainier between Suzzallo Library and Johnson Hall (called Rainier Vista) has received much attention from photographers. Drumheller Fountain, which is located just beyond the two buildings, is an additional attraction.
Around 1930, this picture shows Suzzallo and Savery Hall across what will be Red Square. It was originally called Suzzallo Quadrangle, but an interesting assignment in 1969 was responsible for the name change. In 1923 Governor Roland Hartley referred to the library as "Suzzallo's extravagance". (Dorpat, Vol. I)
In 1971 necessary parking was added under Red Square as part of the Central Plaza development by architects Kirk, Wallace, McKinley and Associates. (Ivester, Bldg. 234) The 1,000-car parking garage was then bricked over and provision made for the release of monoxide fumes through the 140' smokestack designed as a brick monolith. (Dorpat, Vol. I)
