Suzzallo Steps and Raitt

Students on the Suzzallo Library Steps

Taken around 1955, this picture shows that the Suzzallo Library steps were a popular place for socializing, at least when the weather was cooperative. Carved over the doors to the entrance of the library are the names of master printers from the past. The names of Tao Feng, 954-988; Gutenberg, 1400-1468; Aldus, 1447-1550; Estienne, 1503-1559; and Elzevier, 1540-1617 are certainly an appropriate introduction into the world of books inside its doors.

Raitt Hall

Raitt Hall was built in 1916 with architects Bebb and Gould. It was called Home Economics Hall until 1946, when it was renamed after Effie Raitt, director of the Home Economics Department from 1912-1945. She was responsible for getting the Legislature to allocate funds for the building. She invited some of the Representatives to a soggy lunch in the leaky Home Economics shack they had been forced to use. (Chapman, p. 11)
