This fall, 10 Pell Grant-eligible UW undergraduates will study abroad with the support of the Gilman Scholarship program. Many more students with financial need will receive support from Global Opportunities scholarships and other UW awards.

Center for Global Health Nursing promotes ‘health that transcends borders’
Sarah Gimbel and Pam Kohler co-direct the UW School of Nursing Center for Global Health Nursing. The center pushes for the voices of nurses to be included in global health conversations. The center will support nursing students who want to learn and serve overseas, as well as international students who want to study at the UW. Likewise, a global health perspective allows nurses from the U.S. and abroad to learn from one another. “When we say ‘global,’” Gimbel said, “we’re talking about health that transcends borders.”

UW a top producer of Fulbright scholars
The University of Washington is one of the top producers of Fulbright students for 2015-16, according to lists released Monday in the Chronicle of Higher Education. The Fulbright Program, operated by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, is the government’s flagship international educational exchange program. Ten students from the UW — including undergraduate, graduate and recent alumni — were awarded Fulbright grants for 2015-2016. Of those 10, seven were undergraduate students and recent graduates.
Re-thinking safari tourism
UW Bothell professors Ben Gardner and Ron Krabill will lead an exploration seminar called “Critical perspectives on ecotourism in Tanzania” to examine many of the issues raised in Gardner’s newly-released book “Selling the Serengeti: The Cultural Politics of Safari Tourism” and ongoing research in the area. The seminar is funded by a Global Innovation Fund grant.
UW named ‘top producer’ of Fulbright recipients
The University of Washington is one of 12 institutions to make the “top producers” list of both Fulbright scholars and students for 2014-15, according to lists released Thursday in the Chronicle of Higher Education.
The Fulbright Program, operated by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program.
“The UW has a proud history of global engagement, with a large number of faculty engaged in international research collaborations, and many undergraduate and graduate students studying and conducting research abroad,” said Jeffrey Riedinger, the UW’s vice provost for global affairs.
Seven scholars and 13 students from the UW were awarded Fulbright grants for 2014-2015, with the university landing fourth on the scholars list and tied for 17th on the students list.
$16 million grant awarded to Jackson School centers
The U.S. Department of Education will fund all eight of the Jackson School of International Studies‘ Title VI centers with grants of more than $16 million.
The Department of Education’s Title VI awards were introduced to ensure sufficient foreign language training for U.S. security. Grants are awarded to institutions of higher education every four years to establish and strengthen language and area-studies centers for foreign language instruction, research in international studies and world affairs and community outreach and consultation.
UW Bothell offers grants supporting international course collaborations
UW Bothell is spearheading a UW-wide effort to deepen global engagement of students in the classroom by supporting online collaborations with international partners. These collaborations support the development of leading-edge, globally-focused student experiences without requiring students to travel abroad.
The new COIL International Fellows program is designed to support UW faculty and staff from all UW campuses to develop Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) courses. The initiative is overseen by Global Initiatives and funded by a Mellon Foundation Area and International Studies Initiative grant.

Carnegie Corp. funds Jackson School’s work tying international research to policy
The Jackson School of International Studies will split a five million dollar award aimed addressing the disconnect between global research with policymaking. Resat Kesaba, Director of the Jackson School of International Studies, says the award furthers the school’s current work. “We have worked with the companies and nonprofit organizations of the globally connected Pacific Northwest to address critical international challenges, and brought the results of this work to policy makers,” he says.
