Student Philanthropy Education Program (SPEP)

Mission
To provide student leadership opportunities, raise awareness about philanthropy at UW, and instill a greater appreciation for the philanthropic spirit, tradition and significance throughout the university community to build a wider, more knowledgeable base of future supporters.

Overview
The Student Philanthropy Educational Program will give students an in-depth look at the fundraising operations at the University of Washington and will build awareness about the role philanthropy plays at the university. The program will help to communicate the goals, purpose and programs of UW Advancement while educating students on the importance of giving back.

Council
The Student Philanthropy Council consists of a group of highly motivated students interested in the promotion of philanthropy awareness around campus. Students who serve on the council receive training in event planning, project management, fundraising, strategic planning and marketing. Internship credit is available to those students who wish to pursue it. Student Philanthropy Council members serve as an ambassador to students, alumni and friends of the University of Washington.

If you are interested in joining SPEP as a general council member or to be a part of the leadership team, see our application below.

Activities

Philanthropy Day
Philanthropy Day is a campus-wide, day-long celebration of philanthropy at UW throughout the years. Giant purple and gold bows around campus mark some of the gifts each class has donated, and gift tags explain who gave the gift to the university and the purpose of the gift. SPEP representatives in the Quad and in Red Square answer questions and distribute refreshments, t-shirts, and lanyards.

Kickoff
Student Philanthropy Education Program starts off the year with a big Kickoff event in Red Square to recruit new students and raise awareness. The Fall 2011 event was a huge success, with a DJ, a photo booth, and Dubs, our mascot! Students learned more about how philanthropy impacts their education and had the chance to enter to win an iPad in a Facebook competition.

Volunteering
As students, we cannot always afford to give back to the university monetarily. While we encourage students to give when they are able, we like to focus on what we can do right now. We strive to give back to the university and the community with our time through volunteering.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service
Council members spent MLK Day 2011 volunteering outside along the Burke-Gilman Trail. Their service contributed to the ongoing efforts in beautifying the trail for the general public. Council members are passionate about their local environment and the greater community at large. Unfortunately, the 2012 volunteering event had to be cancelled because of a surprising snow storm. The council hopes to continue this tradition next year!
