Founded in 1861, the University of Washington is one of the oldest state-supported institutions of higher education on the West Coast and is one of the preeminent research universities in the world.
Training pharmacists to save lives
An endowed professorship created by UW graduates Herb and Shirley Bridge is enabling UW Pharmacy professionals to consult with patients about medication regimens; providing education about medication use and health management and identifying potential safety concerns or red flags. This medication-therapy-management program helps patients avoid overmedication and adverse reactions between prescriptions, vitamins and any homeopathic remedies they may be taking.
Dubbed UW Pharmacy Cares, the program is the first of its kind in the state. Eventually, the School seeks to create a permanent medication-therapy-management curriculum for all Pharmacy students and to offer clerkships onsite at UW Pharmacy Cares.
