Chapter 4
POLICY ON DISCLOSURE OF STUDENT RECORDS OR INFORMATION BASED UPON SUCH RECORDS
The University continually receives requests from a variety of outside sources for information about students, both past and present. In addition, many offices and departments within the University require access to information contained in student records. The University must assure that information contained in student records is treated in a responsible manner with due regard to the personal nature of the information contained in these records.
In accord with Public Law 93-380, the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, the University has adopted guidelines concerning the right of a student to inspect his or her education records and guidelines concerning the release of personally-identifiable information to third parties. These guidelines are contained in Chapter 478-140 WAC, Rules and Regulations Governing Disclosure of Student Records. Provisions include designation of which records are and are not included in "education records," the procedure by which students may request the review of information in official files, and the responsibility of the University to limit access except in fulfillment of legitimate objectives.
