The University of Washington: Facilities Services

Procedures: Batteries

Batteries

The University of Washington recycles all types of batteries. Batteries cannot be placed in the trash because they contain corrosive acids and toxic metals. Businesses, including the UW, are also required to recycle alkaline batteries, even though households can place them in the trash.

Fewer than 5 pounds

If you have fewer than five pounds of batteries, place them in the nearest e.Media bin.

More than 5 pounds/large batteries

To request a special collection of more than five pounds of batteries, including large research and heavy equipment batteries, or laptop batteries, fill out and mail or fax to Environmental Health & Safety the Battery Collection Request form.

Frequent disposal for labs, shops, etc.

If you frequently need to dispose of batteries, such as in a laboratory, shop, or clinic, Environmental Health & Safety will provide you with a battery recycling bin. To request a battery bin, submit the online New Battery Bin Request form. When your bin is nearly full, submit the online Battery Bin Collection Request form.

Vehicle batteries

Vehicle batteries from the University’s fleet are recycled through Fleet Services.

Leaking batteries

For information about disposal of leaking batteries, see the Environmental Health & Safety Battery Recycling page.
