Tip of the Month
Nov 2009:America Recycles Day is November 15. The purpose of America Recycles Day is to continue to promote the social, environmental and economic benefits of recycling and encourage more people to join the movement toward creating a better natural environment.
Oct 2009:Post employee guides and similar materials online, rather than distributing printed copies. You’ll dramatically reduce your paper use – and the documents will be much easier to update.
Sep 2009:UW Surplus has a new Departments Only Boutique, which features carefully selected office furniture and supplies at great prices. Pictures and prices of items currently available can be found on their website. Items must be purchased on a budget or grant number.
Aug 2009:Bring in a mug or glass from home - and keep some extras on hand for visitors - so that you can reduce or eliminate your use of compostable and/or disposable cups. If you don’t have any at home to spare, check out UW Surplus or a local thrift store for inexpensive items.
Jul 2009:Need interoffice envelopes? Boxes of free recycled envelopes are placed in front of the Accounts Payable and Travel Offices (3917 University Way NE, 2nd floor) between 8:00am and 5:00pm on Fridays. Campus customers can stop by and choose the size and quantity they need.
Jun 2009:Grays Harbor Paper is a locally owned and operated paper company based in Hoquiam, Washington. Their Harbor 100 line is now available through Office Depot in eProcurement. Harbor 100 uses 100% post-consumer recycled materials, is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, and performs as well as virgin forested paper.
May 2009:Milk cartons are not compostable, but they can be recycled. Give them a quick rinse and remove any plastic spouts before putting them in a cans/bottles recycling bin.
Apr 2009:The University is a signatory to the Presidents Climate Commitment, whereby the UW is committed to becoming climate neutral (i.e., having a net zero carbon footprint). In celebration of Earth Day on April 22, find out your personal carbon footprint and some easy ways to reduce it.
Mar 2009:Inventory what you have in your office before ordering new supplies. Encourage full use of items and purchase refillable items, such as mechanical pens and pencils, to reduce waste.
Feb 2009:When you receive unwanted catalogs, newsletters, magazines, or junk mail, request to be removed from the mailing list before you recycle the item.
