Use Your Head! Discounted Helmets
Of the 800 deaths that occur annually in the U.S. from bicycle accidents. 75% percent are due to head injuries. Worn correctly, a helmet can reduce the chance and severity of injury and may even save your life.
Commuter Services and Hall Health Primary Care Center are collaborating to promote bike safety on the UW campus. Bike helmets and an array of safety equipment—including bike lights, helmet mirrors, bike bells, and safety triangles—are sold at the Wellness Resource Center, all with discounts for U-PASS members. The Wellness Resource Center is at Hall Health (room 213), across the street from the HUB.
The Wellness Resource Center stocks helmets in all sizes and a variety of colors. It’s best to call ahead at 206.616.8476 to be sure someone is there to do a free fitting.
Helmet sales support the Department of Health Education, which runs the University Health Education Leadership Program (UHELP), a peer education program. UHELP raises money to do programming on campus and training of peer health educators.
Lighten Up! Discounted Lights
Did you know that one cyclist a day is killed in this country after dark? 48% of bicyclist fatalities occur after dark even though only 10% of riding takes place after dark.
Do your reflectors make you visible? They only work if a light shines onto them from the proper angle to create a reflection. State law requires a white front light visible from a distance of at least five hundred feet and a red reflector on the rear. Use a red light visible from a distance of five hundred feet to the rear, in addition to the reflector, to increase visibility.
U-PASS members get a discount on bike lights at the Hall Health Wellness Resource Center. Drop by Hall Health room 213 or (preferably) call 206.616.8476 before you visit.
Registering Your Bike
Engrave your driver’s license number on your bicycle. The best location is usually on the bottom bracket where most serial numbers are stamped. Be sure the two letters of the state code are included, followed by the letters “DL”. Register your bike free through the UW Police. Registering your bike will facilitate its return to you, should it be stolen.
Locking Your Bike
Cables can be cut easily, so avoid them. The UW Police recommend buying a U-Lock, or better yet, a U-Lock and a cable lock. (Bicycle thieves typically carry a tool for defeating one type of lock or the other, but not both.)
