The University of Washington: Facilities Services

Leave

LEAVE

All leave, other than official holidays, must be requested and approved in advance and must be reported on the forms provided for this by your supervisor or unit office. For more complete information on leave available to you as a University of Washington employee, and the rules governing its use, see the Web site at: http://www.washington.edu/admin/hr/polproc/index.html#leave, or contact the Human Resources Consultant or the Facilities Services Human Resources Administrator.

Vacation

Vacation leave is accumulated monthly at varying rates that are dependent on the length of employment. Vacation leave may not be used during a probationary period. All requests for use of vacation leave must be requested and approved in advance. Approval may be delayed due to workload or unforeseen circumstances.

Sick Leave

Each University of Washington employee accumulates sick leave at the rate of eight hours per month. Unscheduled use of sick leave must be reported each day before the beginning of the work shift to your immediate supervisor or other designated person in authority. Time off for doctors’ appointments or other scheduled medical and dental care is covered by sick leave but must be requested and approved in advance. Employees are encouraged to accumulate sick leave so it will be available for unexpected illness or injury. See the ‘Attendance’ section of this booklet for more information and guidelines on use of sick leave.

Other Types of Leave

The University of Washington also provides for other kinds of paid and unpaid leave, which may be needed or desired by its employees. These include:

  • Bereavement Leave
  • Civil Duty Leave
  • Family Medical Leave and Family Care Leave
  • Leave of Absence Without Pay
  • Military Training Leave
  • Parental Leave

Leave is accrued at the end of each month and is available for use after it is accrued.

Ask your supervisor, contact the Human Resources Administrator, or contact the Human Resources Consultant if you have questions about the types of leave available for your needs.
