Packing Peanuts

UW Recycling has a reuse program for Styrofoam and all other types of packing peanuts.

Small volumes of packing peanuts

Offices and labs that generate small volumes of packing peanuts should collect them in clear bags, with no contamination. Tie off full bags securely and label them with your department’s name and box number.

  • For staff within Health Sciences, including Foege, bring your bags to your nearest loading dock and set the bags next to the recycling containers.
  • For staff at other campus buildings, place the bags at your building’s loading dock and then send an email to UW Recycling.

Large volumes of packing peanuts

Offices and labs that generate large volumes of packing peanuts can contact UW Recycling to establish a collection system, which is a PVC pipe frame on which a packing peanut bag hangs. If you have a collection system in place, use the Packing Peanut Bags Request Form to request additional bags. When bags are full, tie them off securely and label them with your department’s name and box number. Ensure there is no contamination.

  • For staff within Health Sciences, including Foege, bring your bags to your nearest loading dock and set the bags next to the recycling containers.
  • For staff at other campus buildings, place the bags at your building’s loading dock and then send an email to UW Recycling.
