Tip of the Month

Jun 2010:

Food-soiled paper and cardboard, such as a pizza delivery box, is not permitted in the mixed paper recycling containers, but it is compostable. Click here for more information about composting on campus.

May 2010:

In fiscal year 2009, the University of Washington achieved a milestone—it diverted 54% of its waste from the landfill through its recycling and composting programs, its highest waste diversion rate ever. To find out how this was achieved and to learn more about other accomplishments, read the Recycling & Solid Waste Annual Report – Fiscal Year 2009.

Apr 2010:

Forty years ago, UW students conducted the World’s First Trash-In by collecting trash from home and campus and sorting it in front of the HUB. The trash was separated into different categories, including paper, plastic, glass, and metal, and returned to the original producers for reprocessing. This event helped establish the first recycling programs on campus.

In honor of the 40th anniversary of the 1970 Trash-In, Recycling & Solid Waste conducted Trash-In 2010, a mini trash sort of garbage from 7 campus buildings. Of the 1,058 pounds of trash sorted at Trash-In 2010, 42% was compostables, 11% was mixed paper, 8% was cans/bottles, 2% was other recyclables, and 37% was trash. Find out more about Trash-In 2010 by visiting UW Recycling & Solid Waste at the Earth Day celebration on the HUB Lawn, April 22.

Mar 2010:

The University has been composting food waste since 2004. You can join in on the program by composting food scraps from your break rooms and kitchens. Click here for more information about composting on campus.

Feb 2010:

Remember that all items purchased with University funds or given to the University are property of the UW. When no longer needed by your department, you are required to surplus those items, whether they are in working or non-working condition. Items in usable condition are available for resale to UW departments and the public. Other items are recycled or disposed of properly. For more information, contact UW Surplus.

Jan 2010:

It’s a new year and time to make sure that your office has switched to recycled paper for printing and copying. Not only does it make good environmental sense, it’s the law. As of December 31, 2009, all state agencies—including the UW—must purchase “100 percent recycled content white cut sheet bond paper used in office printers and copiers,” according to SHB 2287. In addition, all agencies are required to develop and implement a plan by July 1, 2010, for adopting a paper conservation plan with the goal of reducing paper use by 30%. Need some help reaching this goal? Check out these great paper reduction tips from the State of California.

Dec 2009:

‘Tis the season to celebrate, but that doesn’t have to mean going overboard with gifts, wrapping paper, food, and other things. Join King County in promoting Green Holidays and make yours a waste (and stress) free season.

Nov 2009:

America Recycles Day is November 15. The purpose of America Recycles Day is to continue to promote the social, environmental and economic benefits of recycling and encourage more people to join the movement toward creating a better natural environment.

Oct 2009:

Post employee guides and similar materials online, rather than distributing printed copies. You’ll dramatically reduce your paper use – and the documents will be much easier to update.

Sep 2009:

UW Surplus has a new Departments Only Boutique, which features carefully selected office furniture and supplies at great prices. Pictures and prices of items currently available can be found on their website. Items must be purchased on a budget or grant number.
