According to an article in the Guardian, MySpace is now less than have the size of Facebook. It says, “MySpace had 124 million monthly unique visitors last month, a decline of 2%, according to the marketing research company comScore. Facebook, by contrast, racked up 276 million unique visitors, an increase of 16.6%.”

I can’t say that I see this as much of a surprise. As social media continue to evolve into more for-profit enterprises, revenue generating opportunities (read: advertising) will continue to increase. For the youth market, this is something that, to a degree, they can ignore (there’s a study somewhere that mentions this) but overload the page and you get a reduction in overall use.

Combine this with newer, hipper and much simpler applications like Facebook and you’ll see the decline continue.

That said, Facebook is beginning to suffer itself. It’s gone through a number of iterations over the past years – some good, some not-so-good – which, if not managed well, could lead them down the same path.
