Campus Mass Assembly Areas
The University of Washington has designated and approved eight (8) outdoor Mass Assembly Areas for the dissemination of critical news, alerts and information to the campus in the event of a major disaster or emergency. These sites will be staffed with UW volunteers and staff who will be in direct contact with the UW's crisis communications team and/or emergency operations center staff. When activated, these sites will serve as focal points for up-to-date, timely and accurate campus disaster information. They are intended to serve primarily as one-way information hubs for "official" campus information (i.e. Is campus closed? Where do I go for help? Are classes postponed? What evacuation routes are open? etc...) Future plans for these 8 sites include provision of emergency triage and medical care, feeding and distribution of disaster supplies (currently unfunded). Click (here) for a PDF map of the current mass assembly areas. These sites are located outdoors due to the high likelihood of building or structural damage after a major earthquake.

UW's Mobile Emergency Command Post
The UW has a unique and specialized emergency response tool called the SEMOC. SEMOC stand for "Special Event Mobile Operations Center."
SEMOC is a mobile command center constructed by the Washington State non-profit organization Association of Operations Volunteers (AOV). Completed in 2001, it was sold to the University of Washington in 2003. Based on a 60 foot Metro bus, SEMOC was specifically designed to provide support at small and large events. Its secondary design purpose was to be used as a platform for emergency services in the event of a large disaster or similar incident.
SEMOC contains a communications center with two console positions and counter space for laptop computers, phones, and radio base stations. It is equipped with CCTV cameras and monitors, its own onboard generation and battery storage system, and a charging rack of handheld mobile radios. The rear half of SEMOC has a kitchen, bathroom, bunk beds, and a conference area. Click and download for more information [PDF]
