Two floors of Raitt Hall on the main quad of the University of Washington campus
are currently undergoing a major renovation to house the Center for Digital Arts
and Experimental Media.
When completed in autumn 2003, the new facilities will
house an array of experimental classrooms, studios, and laboratories, as well as
offices for faculty, staff, graduate students, and visiting artists.
Some spaces
will be optimized for a particular area of study and work (for example, the Digital
Media Classroom/Studio will be optimized for work that relies heavily on digital
video while the Digital Audio Classroom/Studio will support computer music and
digital sound research and production), but all spaces will encourage
multidisciplinary teaching, learning, and creative research.

The Center will
contain a large multi-use computer lab as well as small studios for work in
private. The Incubator and Observatory
(I/O) is envisioned as a highly unique and critical feature of DXARTS in Raitt Hall.
Equal parts sound stage, virtual theater, video production studio, and robotics
laboratory, the I/O is DXARTs "totally wired" ideation and iteration space.
The
space is dedicated to providing expert tools and access for students to build and
test sophisticated prototypes of their digital and experimental arts research.
Construction is on schedule and we expect to move in and open the doors to our
new home by January 2004.
