Feedback

The Feedback Suite is a proposed series of kinetic sculptures for the creation of video feedback loops with real-time image processing. Video feedback is normally created by turning a camera upon its own image, creating a nearly instantaneous infinite loop. For these video sculptures I have created a software system of hundreds of video delays, arranged in a grid, thus allowing me to control the image’s rate of decay, and explore a rich vocabulary of color, textures, mutations, and movement in time.

The transformation of video in physical space is at the core of my artistic practice. Similarly, video feedback requires the physical, cyclical mediation of image through lens and screen. For The Feedback Suite I have fabricated a prototype kinetic armature designed to continuously insert new images into the loop, while activating the sculptural presence of the mechanism in the gallery. As the active image on the feedback screen erodes into abstraction a second, smaller LCD screen is automatically raised in front of the camera’s lens. This simultaneously interrupts the current feedback loop while inserting a new source image into the subsequent sequence. As the small screen recedes from the camera’s lens, the larger screen is once-again revealed, and the feedback loop starts again.

Accompanying the visual vocabulary of The Feedback Suite will be a real-time audio component triggered by the various states of the system. As new images are introduced, sounds will emerge as recognizable characters. Through real-time processing, these characters will pass through a similar set of filers and delays in the sonic domain as the images are subjected to in the visual. The resulting sound environment will continually transform from crisp, recognizable moments to clouds of granular textures, abstracted from their original sources.
