Here sounding the trails upon fingertips and toes
Daphne Chu
latex, video
12' x 5' x 1.5-10'
I could not bring myself to write for a long while. To articulate or even allude to the source was all too painful. It was still too real, too present, too overwhelming. I shut down. Completely. It was important that the latex pieces were hand laid, hand sewn, and hand stitched against the structure. That the physical act of making informed the piece. That hand and breath were engaged in that very process. Because only then and there was I truly present. This was of absolute necessity. It was also important that I carried these components to this location. That if space were a temporary resting point for me, then the implications of leaving soon after were ever more present.
This piece considers migration. Not in the physical act of moving from one place to another, but rather the emotional, interior shift that occurs in the process of carrying, holding, and transporting things and persons.
