MLK Day of Service 2013

This year, a small group of Dream Project mentors participated in the MLK day of service, working at the Cheasty Greenspace in Beacon Hill.

Our day began bright and early with the kickoff at the HUB, where we listened to various speakers commemorate Dr. King’s incredible life. We then traveled to the park in Beacon Hill, streaming the Presidential¬†Inauguration on the way, of course :) We were divided into groups and headed into the woods, where the EarthCorps leaders explained to us our task for the day. They asked us to clear invasive species of blackberries and ivy from a particular section of woods.

Those of us in Dream Project are familiar with volunteering. We spend hours each week in classrooms working with high school students. The type of volunteering we did on MLK day, working with plants and dirt, out in the environment, isn’t something many of us have the opportunity to experience. It was a wonderful change of pace, a chance to bond with our fellow mentors, and give back to our communities in a different way than normal.
