It’s finally here! Our wonderful mentors and volunteers have been especially busy these past couple of weeks. Spring BBQ is this week! On Friday, May 2nd, our new cohort of mentees will be visiting us at the University of Washington Seattle campus to experience a day in the life of a college student. They will be treated to a full day, including:
- Lunch catered by Smokin’ Pete’s BBQ
- A tour of campus led by our own Dream Project mentors
- A lecture by some of UW’s remarkable professors
In order to help the hundreds of Dream Project mentees coming to the 2014 Spring BBQ get the whole look at the college experience, we’re working groups of twenty mentees each. Each group will have a tour guide to show them around the University of Washington campus, and the weather report couldn’t be better. Tour guides will take their groups around our beautiful campus, visiting hotspots including the Husky Union Building (HUB), McMahon Residence Hall, and the Kane Lecture Hall. They will also show the mentees to their lectures, which will be taking place on south campus near the Medical Center.
We will also be featuring guest speakers Toka Valu and Candice Garza. Toka is an Outreach and Admissions Counselor and Pacific Islander Recruitment Coordinator, as well as a Kent-Meridian High School alum. Candice is an Outreach and Admissions Counselor and Hispanic/Latino Coordinator. Together, they will be keeping our mentees informed and entertained during lunch! Get ready for a friendly dance competition during a chow break catered by Smokin’ Pete BBQ! Even more exciting, the high school mentees will be representing their schools for a chance at various prizes that have been generously donated from the local community.
Spring BBQ is more than just a day off of school. Some of our mentees have never visited a college campus before. Having something tangible to work towards is invaluable for keeping mentees and mentors motivated throughout the next year. It is also a great chance for mentors to bond with their new mentees!
The weather forecast shows that it is going to be in the 70′s on Friday so be prepared for a sunny day of tours, lunch, and lectures! Come by and join the BBQ of the year!
