Welcome to AccessSTEM Spotlights!

You'll want to get to know the people pursuing challenging academic programs and careers and engaging in an innovative coalition called AccessSTEM.

This publication spotlights AccessSTEM leaders and participants, facilitates communication among the participants, and shares their progress with others. Its purpose is to bring community members together, demonstrate the vast capabilities of STEM students with disabilities, provide information to STEM recruiters for internships and career positions, and describe project activities.

The Alliance for Students with Disabilities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (AccessSTEM) serves to increase the number of people with disabilities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by encouraging students with disabilities to pursue STEM fields and then supporting those who show an interest and aptitude in STEM. Hosted by the DO-IT (Disabilities, Opportunities, Internetworking, and Technology) Center at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle, AccessSTEM is a project funded by the National Science Foundation (grant #HRD-0227995 and #HRD-0833504). Since 1992, DO-IT has engaged in programs to increase the success of college-capable students with disabilities as they pursue challenging academic programs and careers.

Individuals included in this publication are members of the AccessSTEM Team. Team members engage in an online community of peers, near peers, and professionals to discuss academic challenges, social life, accommodations, assistive technology, research projects, and other topics. Mentors, most of whom have disabilities themselves, provide guidance and offer resources. Students engage in paid internships, workshops and conferences, leadership experiences, and research opportunities as they transition to college, graduate school, and employment. AccessSTEM students attend in-person events on college campuses that include Bellevue College (BC), Seattle Central Community College (SCCC), and the UW. Events are designed to increase knowledge about STEM fields and develop student networks of professional and social contacts.

About AccessSTEM

The Alliance for Students with Disabilities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (AccessSTEM) is a dynamic coalition of students, faculty, service providers, and employers. In a nutshell, this alliance promotes

  • the full inclusion of people with disabilities in academic programs and careers in STEM.
  • the availability of accessible technology for STEM students and employees with disabilities.
  • the application of universal design in the development of technology, information resources, programs, services, and STEM curricula.

The first AccessSTEM project began in 2002 as a partnership between the UW and postsecondary schools in Alaska, Washington, Idaho, and Oregon. These schools collaborated with high schools, government and industry employers, and service agencies. It was funded by the National Science Foundation (grant #HRD-0227995) for six years. Ongoing support for participants in the first alliance has been facilitated by AccessSTEM's host organization, the DO-IT Center at the UW, primarily through two types of communities:

  • E-mentoring communities of individuals with disabilities and mentors, with many participants serving in both mentee and mentor roles.
  • Communities of Practice (CoPs) where educators and other stakeholders (e.g., STEM faculty, veteran-serving professionals, disability services staff, employers) engage with one another for the purpose of making academic programs and careers in STEM more welcoming and accessible.

A second AccessSTEM project was funded by the National Science Foundation in 2008 (grant #HRD-0833504) and continues to be led by the DO-IT Center. The focus of the current alliance is on creating a local model for a continuum of support with high schools, colleges, and universities that promotes the success of students with disabilities pursuing STEM degrees. This project continues to support e-mentoring communities for participants and mentors as well as CoPs for practitioners. It offers research-based interventions and promising practices to high school, college, and graduate students, and supports educators as they make STEM programs more welcoming and accessible to students with disabilities.

The UW, BC, SCCC, and Seattle Public Schools (SPS) are the current AccessSTEM partners. As partners, leaders at the schools work with project staff to implement evidence-based practices that will ultimately increase the number of individuals with disabilities moving through critical junctures to STEM associate, baccalaureate, and graduate degrees and careers. Together, they make STEM programs more welcoming and accessible to high school students with disabilities; expand the engagement of stakeholder groups that include STEM faculty, disability service providers, veterans organizations and students; engage in outreach activities to high school students with disabilities; and expand an online resource center that shares research and promising practices with others.

AccessSTEM Activities

AccessSTEM offers engaging activities for high school and college students with disabilities. These include participation in an e-mentoring community, internships, and other work-based learning, workshops on STEM and college preparation, and field trips. AccessSTEM college students build their network of professional contacts and learn about STEM career fields. They increase their knowledge about assistive technology, work accommodations, and research.

Activities and Events for College Students

College students at AccessSTEM partner schools (UW, SCCC, and BC) are offered learning labs and workshops, contests and social events, paid opportunities to participate in focus groups or deliver panel presentations, and stipends to attend student leadership or STEM conferences.

Electronic and In-person Mentoring: Students engage with mentors online and in person. They learn about academic programs, accommodations, transition-to-work, and STEM careers. Students are also able to ask questions, seek advice, and share success stories.

Work-Based Learning: AccessSTEM students have regular opportunities to engage with corporate partners at events and workshops. For example, the Microsoft Corporation participates in an annual Mentoring Day where students meet with employees to learn about different jobs, review their resume and career goals, and make connections with professional mentors. Last summer, several AccessSTEM Team members travelled to Microsoft's campus to learn about product development, interact with a panel of employees who had disabilities, tour the technology museum, and learn about accessibility features in products. The students also completed a robotic-design project with the help of Microsoft employees. Other corporate partners include Seattle BioMed, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, and Studio Pacifica Architects. Students also engage with corporate recruiters during events such as the U.S. Department of Labor's Workforce Recruitment Program, ENTRYPOINT!, Washington State's Project HIRE, and local job fairs.

AccessSTEM Internships: AccessSTEM student participants have completed more than 200 challenging internships in recent years! They have been inside an active volcano collecting data, watched a space shuttle launch from a control room, worked as a chemical engineer to explore photo-reproduction, explored the mystery of an unhealthy wolf population by analyzing parasite DNA, counted salmon at Mud Mountain Dam, and created working models of new rocket propulsion technology.

Student research internships from the last year include:

  • A biology research intern at UW's prestigious Kaeberlin Lab.
  • A mechanical engineering intern at Tethers Unlimited.
  • An astronomy research intern for the UW Astronomy department.
  • A library science researcher for the Renton Public Library.
  • A bio-molecular structure intern for UW's Dagget Research Group.

Other examples of AccessSTEM student internships include:

  • Internet accessibility and web design interns.
  • Computer modeling and 3D animation interns.
  • Lab coordinator interns at the UW Assistive Technology Center.
  • Computer programming interns at the Microsoft Corporation.
  • Technical interns at the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration.
  • A computer networking intern at the Rose International Fund.
  • An environmental science intern with the Seattle chapter of the Sierra Club.
  • An equipment and software specialist intern at TechStep.
  • A technical program assistant intern at the UW Athletics Department.
  • A science education intern at the Pacific Science Center.
  • A computer programming intern for the American Red Cross.

Workshops: AccessSTEM participants learn about college success and STEM topics. Some students have engaged in web accessibility training and a follow-up internship where they test the accessibility of STEM websites and prepare accessibility feedback for web masters to help them improve their sites.

A 2010 AccessSTEM intern travelled to Costa Rica to complete a Hymenopteran observation study (counting bees and wasps). At one point, the group was following a GPS unit to the research site, when they came upon a 40-foot cliff. It can be said that the life of an intern is not dull! But when you are surrounded by coffee fields and receiving credit, how bad can it be?

Project staff help students understand how to get the most from these and other experiences in AccessSTEM. Staff also learn from student feedback about activities and internships.

Participation of Seattle Public Schools

SPS, a partner of AccessSTEM, is the largest K-12 school system in Washington State, serving more than 45,000 students in eighty-eight schools. SPS works within the AccessSTEM partnership to make STEM programs more welcoming and accessible to high school students with disabilities; expand the engagement of stakeholders; implement evidence-based practices to increase the number of students with disabilities transitioning to college; and expand an online resource center that shares research and promising practices with others.

Project staff work with administrators, counselors, parents, and educators to promote project activities and collaborate on project goals. For example, AccessSTEM staff attend meetings of the Career and College Advisory Committee and the Transition Planning Committee, as well as regular meetings of the career and counseling center and the special education department.

SPS who have become AccessSTEM Team members participate in electronic mentoring to learn more about opportunities and challenges in STEM fields. They also communicate with Team members who are in college or employed to learn about academic programs, how to be successful in college, work-based learning opportunities, and STEM careers. Team members are invited to local events on college campuses and at local STEM employers. For example, in October 2010, SPS teachers and nearly 100 students participated in the AccessSTEM Mentoring Day for students with disabilities. Student mentees learned about the skills and education needed to be successful in careers by visiting local companies such as Boeing, Seattle Children's (Hospital), Port of Seattle at SeaTac, and Seattle BioMed. They learned about a wide variety of jobs from employees that took time to talk about their work and their career.

Examples of activities for SPS students include the following:

  • UW College of Engineering Discovery Days
  • UW Math Day
  • Seattle Community Colleges' transition to college events
  • UW Access Technology Center tours
  • UW College of Engineering learning labs
  • STEM Networking Events
  • Career Events such as Mentoring Day at the UW Power Plant

Occasionally, AccessSTEM engages participants in contests. For example, in December 2010, AccessSTEM hosted it's second annual "STEM Resume Contest." Students received a series of online lessons about resumes and were encouraged to send their updated resume to project staff. Prizes were awarded to students who wrote the best resumes as well as those who demonstrated a commitment to STEM learning and participation in STEM activities.

AccessSTEM Team Members

The AccessSTEM Team engages high school and postsecondary students, along with mentors from STEM fields. Specifically, the Team includes:

  • SPS high school students with disabilities considering STEM fields.
  • College and graduate school students at AccessSTEM partner schools who are pursuing STEM or considering STEM fields.
  • Other individuals—including project staff and mentors—who are engaged in the disability community, STEM academic or career fields, or have other expertise that is of value to the AccessSTEM community.

Adult mentors are an important part of the AccessSTEM Team. AccessSTEM Mentors are college students, faculty, and professionals in a wide variety of STEM fields, many with disabilities themselves. Mentoring takes place on the Internet and at college campuses. Frequent electronic communications and personal contacts bring AccessSTEM participants together with Mentors to facilitate academic, career, and personal achievements. Mentors offer the following:

  • Information. Mentors share their knowledge, experiences, and wisdom.
  • Contacts. Mentors provide valuable opportunities by facilitating academic, career, and personal contacts.
  • Challenges. Mentors stimulate curiosity and build confidence by presenting new ideas, opportunities, and challenges.
  • Support. Mentors encourage growth and achievement by providing an open and supportive environment.
  • Goal Setting. Mentors help students discover talents and interests and define and attain their goals.
  • Advice. Mentors guide students in reaching academic, career, and personal goals.
  • Role Modeling. Mentors share their experiences, perspectives, and pathways to success.

AccessSTEM Team Postsecondary Members

AccessSTEM Team members at partner schools—UW, BC, and SCCC—learn about STEM programs and careers, complete challenging internships, and other work-based learning opportunities, engage with Mentors, participate in workshops, and attend networking and social events. The bios that follow represent some of the many postsecondary AccessSTEM Team members. In order to promote on-site interaction, students who are currently enrolled at or are recent graduates of AccessSTEM partner schools are marked with an asterisk (*). Team members not affiliated with a partner school also share college, graduate school, employment, and disability-related perceptions, experiences, and expertise through electronic discussions and other events. In addition, eighteen SPS high school students engage in AccessSTEM e-mentoring and project activities.

Hi. I'm Brandon. I am in my third year at Rochester Institute of Technology where I plan on earning a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. I enjoy math, science, and computer aided design, which is architectural and engineering design software. I am hard of hearing and have attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which makes it hard to concentrate. I also have dysgraphia, which makes it difficult for me to write. I write best on a computer. I like to play video games, design things on the computer, and hang out with friends.

Hi, I'm Brittany. I am a junior at Rochester Institute of Technology where I am majoring in clinical psychology. I enjoy the study of criminology (my minor) and analyzing different types of art (such as film or books). I am hard of hearing, have mild cerebral palsy, and a neurological disorder called mitochondrial disease which, coupled with the cerebral palsy, can be very draining and tiring. I enjoy reading, playing video games, browsing the Internet, and spending time with animals and friends.

I have benefitted from AccessSTEM support since 2002. AccessSTEM supported my work as a technical intern at the UW Access Technology Center. I have participated in many AccessSTEM activities, including networking events, the Web Accessibility Training program in 2009, and UW Workforce Recruitment Program events, which are managed by AccessSTEM staff.

I help with game day promotions of sporting events and focus on increasing fan attendance in all of the UW's athletic programs. AccessSTEM facilitated my 2010 computing internship at InterConnection. In SCIR we are dedicated to bringing awareness to the community about the struggles of U.S. immigrants. Our goal is to help them obtain a higher education and build a better future through workshops and community involvement. I will continue my work with people and advocate for their rights through my double major in law diversity with a justice concentration and Spanish. I plan to one day go to law school and become an immigration lawyer.

My thesis is titled Understanding and Supporting the Adoption of Assistive Technologies by Adults with Reading Disabilities. My passion for reading was what drew me to this topic. As I learned more about the social aspects of disability, I found myself engaging in advocacy efforts and even came to realize that my depression and anxiety issues were disabilities. Since I earned my Ph.D., I have been a member of the AccessSTEM A-Team. I enjoy identifying new activities and recruiting and mentoring younger students. I am looking for a post-doc position in educational research. My goal is to become a professor in an education department, teaching about the various intersections of disability, literacy, and technology.

My research involves diseases of marine invertebrates. I hope to begin graduate school after I earn my science degree. I would like to work in disease diagnostics, environmental health, and toxicology. AccessSTEM staff helped me arrange housing for a new research internship this summer at the Dow Chemical Company.

I am currently completing an AccessSTEM internship to create an accessible website for a local deaf-blind service center. I am passionate about information technology, and I get excited about programming, databases, and technical support. I also enjoy mentoring younger students through the AccessSTEM e-mentoring community. My dream job would be an information technology position where I could make an impact on the accessibility of technology for people of different abilities. I believe that one motivated person has the ability to change the world.

Hi, my name is Lisa. I am a graduate student at the UW School of Forest Resources. My studies focus on the impact of climate change on the functionality of tropical hymenopteran parasitoids (bees and wasps) as biological control agents of pest species in Coffea arabica (coffee). In other words, I chase insects through steep, muddy coffee fields. Although most of my field work is based in Costa Rica, I've also worked in Kenya as a field research assistant examining how elephant disturbance of forested habitat affects the arthropod prey of an endangered bird species. More locally, I assisted with a U.S. Corps of Engineers study examining the role of freshwater fish predation upon salmon fry. My other recent work includes field studies examining both temperate and tropical insect biodiversity in agro-ecosystems. Through AccessSTEM funding, I am working as an intern in a UW biology lab examining the DNA and hormonal profiles of endangered species. In 2011, I was awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship.

I earned my bachelor's degree from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 2009. My prime academic interest is determining the different factors that cause volcanic eruptions around the planet. I'm currently writing my thesis on the Obsidian Dome near Long Valley, California. Other academic interests include the interplay between geology and society when it comes to preparing for geologic hazards and geoscience education. Hello everyone, my name is Heather! I plan on graduating in June from the UW with my bachelor's degree in anthropology with an emphasis in medicine and global health. I am also minoring in chemistry and political science. Being ADD I have extreme difficulty with testing; especially in the sciences where small distractions pull me away from complex chain computations and anxiety reduces words into black ink. However, I am tenacious, and plan to graduate with honors. As a single mother and veteran of the U.S. Air Force, I had to work hard for my education. It's so wonderful to learn, I can't help wishing I could get five other degrees too! In my free time, I enjoy volunteering. Recently, I have been a volunteer at the UW Surgery Center as a general aid in pre- and post-operations, and also at Warren G. Magnuson park's nature development/preservation project. In 2007 my AmeriCorps team and I received the St. Francis Humanitarian of the Year award for our work with the homeless. I also enjoy sports and have played with the Fat-Sox intramural team for two seasons and the UW Women's Rugby team for one season.

My name is Sheryl Burgstahler, and I am the founder and director of DO-IT, including AccessSTEM. I have a husband, Dave, and a son, Travis, who are both dedicated project volunteers. Dave is a professor at the UW Seattle and Travis just finished his sophomore year at the school; he is currently pursuing engineering and business fields. I have a master's degree in mathematics, with a strength in computer science, and a Ph.D. in higher education. I am the director of the Accessible Technology division at the UW Seattle and an affiliate associate professor in education. DO-IT combines my personal, academic, and professional interests.

Scott

I'm Scott Bellman. I work as a program manager for AccessSTEM. I supervise project staff and help students find challenging internships and jobs throughout the year. I also help collect data, write reports, plan activities, coordinate meetings, supervise the A-Team, and recruit participants. I earned master's degree in 1996 in rehabilitation counseling. I am currently a licensed mental health counselor in Washington State. Outside of work, my interests include performance art, camping and hiking, carpentry, and travel.

My name is Brianna Blaser, and I am a counselor/coordinator for AccessSTEM. I plan activities, deliver presentations, and help recruit students and faculty. Originally from the East Coast, I moved to Seattle to attend graduate school at the UW Seattle, where I earned my Ph.D. studying women in science. I like to spend my free time practicing yoga, riding my bike, and watching reality television.

Hi! My name is Tami Tidwell. I work as a project coordinator for AccessSTEM. My main role is to liaison with community colleges and help facilitate quality work-based learning experiences for students, such as internships, informational interviews, and job shadows. I enjoy working closely with AccessSTEM participants. I also plan activities for advisors and faculty. I was born and raised in Cowtown (a.k.a. Ft. Worth, TX). I earned my degree in psychology from Texas Christian University.

My name is Terry Thompson. I am a technology specialist for DO-IT, which includes AccessSTEM. In this position I help to educate K?12 and postsecondary educational institutions, technology vendors, government agencies, and others on how to ensure that technology is accessible to individuals with disabilities. I live in Bellingham and work most of the time from an office at Western Washington University. When I am not working, you can usually find me hiking in the mountains, playing guitar, or spending quality time with my family.

My name is Debra Zawada. I am a project coordinator for AccessSTEM. I work most closely with Seattle public schools, to help facilitate student involvement in the project and provide training and resources to educators and administrators. My biggest events include Disability Mentoring Day and Transition-to-College Fairs at community colleges. I completed my undergraduate work in special education in Buffalo, N.Y. and my graduate work at the UW Seattle. My background is as a high school teacher and transition counselor for students with disabilities. Outside of work, when not spending time with friends and family, I love to garden and create art using recycled materials.

AccessSTEM Student Leaders

A number of active AccessSTEM participants were formalized into a student advisory and action group called the "A-Team." The A-Team is charged with validating potential activities at partner schools from the perspective of STEM students with disabilities and to help design, schedule, and implement them. A-Team meetings are facilitated by the project PI and project manager. Project staff discuss reports from the A-Team and—based on their consistency with project goals, what is known about evidence-based practices, past experiences in this and earlier projects, and project objectives—some are recommended for consideration by partners.

Some activities of the A-Team include:

  • Evaluating labs on partner campuses to make accessibility recommendations.
  • Providing leadership for student contests and events.
  • Conducting student recruitment in disability services offices at the start of a term.
  • Provide assistance with partner campus resource dissemination.
  • Maintain the AccessSTEM Activities and Events website.
  • Hanging flyers on partner campuses to promote the project.
  • Contributing content for newsletters and project products.
  • Sending information about scholarships and internships to AccessSTEM Team members.
  • Delivering presentations at college classes and campus workshops.
  • Engaging with career centers to educate them about the AccessSTEM project.
  • Hosting social events for AccessSTEM Team members.
  • Providing information to student groups and student-run organizations.
