Opportunities Spring 2013 A DO-IT Publication; Seattle Public Schools Edition Discovering Opportunities: Students with Disabilities Many opportunities await high school students with disabilities, especially those who are interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. This publication offers an introduction to some local opportunities for high school students. Page two provides information on a nanotechnology workshop, the annual Paws-on Science event, a transition to college event at Seattle Central Community College, and an Autism Awareness Event at Bellevue College. On page three, find information about Engineering Discovery Days, an upcoming Children's Hospital Jobs Event, the AccessSTEM Pizza Networking Event, and how high school students can arrange for DO-IT to visit their school. Seeking High School Students with STEM Interest Are you a high school student with a disability who wants to attend college? who wants work-based learning experiences? who wants access to mentors with disabilities? who is interested in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics? The AccessSTEM Team is looking for students with disabilities interested in STEM fields. The team provides opportunities for students to locate internships; participate in work-based learning experiences; attend college and career transition fairs; develop self-advocacy skills and accommodation strategies; and network with peers, mentors, and professionals. April 3, 2013, 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. This interactive workshop will take place at SHINE, Seattle Hub for Industry-driven Nanotechnology Education located at North Seattle Community College. Maureen Devery, Outreach Manager will provide demonstrations and opportunities for experimentation to illustrate this emerging field. Followed by pizza lunch and tour of NSCC. High school students must register and be accompanied by a school based staff or parent to attend. Lunch provided. Transportation possible. Paws-on Science April 5 - 7, 2013 Learn about ground-breaking research from UW scientists during a special weekend event at the Pacific Science Center. Visit workshops, catch a live science demonstration and don't miss out on a special appearance by the Husky Marching Band. UW activity stations will be featured throughout the Science Center. Come by the DO-IT AccessSTEM booth and try out some accessible science equipment! Admission reimbursement for AccessSTEM team members and one family member. Space is limited to 65 students. 2nd Annual Autism Awareness Video Game Tournament April 13th, 2013 The Bellevue College cafeteria is the place to be on April 13th from 11am to 5pm. An all-ages Mario Kart tournament will join autism vendors, special speakers, a student panel, an amazing silent auction, and more! DO-IT Scholars are teens with disabilities who are preparing for college or careers. Scholars attend live-in summer study programs at the UW and participate in work-based learning experiences. DO-IT Pals participate in an electronic community to support their academic and career goals. DO-IT also maintains resources for teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders.
