DO-IT 2-4 Transition Project

The "DO-IT 2-4" project helps students with disabilities in community and technical colleges successfully transition to four-year institutions. It is funded by the US Department of Education through the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (grant #P116B71441). The learner-centered approach uses the Internet, mentoring, internships, and other work experiences to help students increase their independence and productivity and develop self-advocacy and leadership skills. Adaptive technology, disability awareness and transition presentations coupled with local planning sessions for coordination of campus support services assist both students and professionals who support students with disabilities. Project activities serve to increase the participation of community and technical college students with disabilities in four-year academic programs, ultimately increasing the pool of qualified people and reducing the unemployment and under-employment of individuals with disabilities.

Presentations, Meetings, and Data Collection.

The 2-4 staff developed and disseminated two surveys. One survey elicits information from disability services administrators nationwide about the support provided to students with disabilities as they transfer from two-year to four-year institutions. The second collects information from students who are just starting the transition process or who have successfully completed the process. The results of the surveys are being compiled and will be disseminated by the end of 2000. DO-IT 2-4 staff have presented overviews of the program and survey results at the Washington Association on Postsecondary Education and Disability (W.A.P.E.D.) conference, the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD) conference, the FIPSE annual project directors meeting and several more regional conferences throughout Washington State.

DO-IT continues to offer presentations on the project, adaptive technology, transition issues for students with disabilities and faculty and staff training sessions on campuses throughout Washington State. DO-IT staff visit two-year campuses and facilitate meetings designed to help students learn to use adaptive technology, develop transition strategies, and expand experiences; as well as to present at regional and national conferences.
