Accessible Design for Web Portals

UW-IT accessibility specialist Terrill Thompson was interviewed by the online journal Campus Technology to help answer the question: What are the keys to a successful university portal? "Design for Accessibility" ranked third on their list, and Thompson explains why UW's MyUW portal meets accessibility standards. Some of the key techniques are keyboard navigation for users who are unable to use a mouse, HTML headings to facilitate navigation between discrete sections of content for screen reader users, and accessible alternatives to AJAX or JavaScript-generated content or features.
