Some individuals with physical disabilities use environmental control units (ECU) which allow them to independently operate a variety of household appliances and other devices with a single switch or remote control. Some systems are computer-based. The controller that a particular person uses to operate an ECU depends on his individual preferences and abilities. An ECU can be used to open a door, dial a telephone, adjust the volume level on a television, or turn lights on and off. An ECU can control just about any electronic device in the home.
