The number of individuals with disabilities seeking postsecondary education continues to increase.
Reasons cited for this increase include:
- Advances in medical technology and techniques resulting in greater numbers of people who have survived accidents and problematic births.
- Technological improvements which have increased the independence and productivity of people with disabilities.
- Federal and state legislative mandates for pre-college academic support programs which encourage students with disabilities to complete high school and consider postsecondary education options.
- Increased public awareness of federal disability rights legislation which includes rights to accommodations in education and employment.
