ACTIVITY: THEATRE: "For Colored Girls Who Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow Is Enuf"
LOCATION: UW Ethnic Cultural Theatre
DESCRIPTION: January 16th - February 2nd, For Colored Girls...-a choreopoem by Ntozake Shange-was the first show on Broadway to ever boast an all-Black female cast and is a true American classic that revolutionized the theatre by expanding the boundaries of tradition and form. Weaving together poetry, rhythm, music, dance, and drama in a theatrical collage, this piece declares the vibrant passions, tribulations, triumphs and color of growing into womanhood; it explores the experience of African-American women and it celebrates the resilience of the soul. There's poetry in motion with the song and the dance-the stories they tell challenge, provoke and inspire. Don't miss this opportunity to see this classic work.

will feature:
OPENING SESSION:9:30 AM-11:30 PM

Featuring Introductory speech by Richard McCormick, motivational speech by
Dr. Calvin Mackie (Tulane University), as well as cultural performances
(from SHOW, etc)

Located in the HUB East Ballroom
Featuring various UW academic departments, student organizations, etc.
WORKSHOP SESSIONS: 11:30 AM-1:30 PM Including sessions
focusing
on the Time Management and What it Means to be a Student of Color.
LECTURE: 12:00 AM-1:30 PM Featuring faculty members Ana
Mari Cauce and Nan Little. To ensure the success of this event, we need
your help! Volunteers are needed to assist with projects ranging from
serving as representatives to our contact schools and organizations to
working on set up for the day of the event. The level of committment is
entirely up to you---as much or as little time as you can provide is
greatly needed. As a campus community, we must show that the UW remains
committed to providing access to education for ALL members of our society,
rather than only catering to the needs of the elite. Opening our campus
doors to underserved minority and disadvantaged studnets for even a day is
one step in the right direction--and this cannot happen without the
cohesive efforts of UW students, faculty, community members, and many
others.

justice activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, president of the Movement for the Survival
of the Ogoni People (MOSOP). Ken Saro-Wiwa mobilized the Ogoni people to
fight Shell Oil's destruction of their land. Ken Saro-Wiwa was executed by the
Nigerian military government on November 10, 1995. Owens Wiwa, a medical
doctor and a human rights activist, escaped from Nigeria a few days after his
brother's execution. As a political activist, Dr. Wiwa has documented
human rights abuses perpetrated upon the Ogoni by the Nigerian Army, as well as
environmentally-related diseases among the Ogoni. In 1990, he established
two private rural health centers to meet the needs of the Ogoni people. In so
doing, he treated hundreds of Ogoni men, women and children injured as a
result of ongoing military repression in Ogoni. He is a member of the Steering
Committee of MOSOP and has held other posts in the Ogoni movement.
Dr. Wiwa is a spirited warrior and an inspiration to all who love and
cherish freedom. His unbroken will is a guiding light to people in the Motherland

ACTIVITY: Long Night's Journey Into Day
LOCATION: 301 Miller Hall
DESCRIPTION: A Long Night's Journey Into Day takes you inside post-apartheid South Africa
to give you an intimate look at a country's attempts to heal itself with truth.
It reveals a South Africa trying to forge a lasting peace after 40 years of government by the
most notorious system of racial segregation since Nazi Germany. The documentary studies South
Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission, set up by the post-apartheid democratic government
to consider amnesty for perpetrators of crimes committed under apartheid's reign.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission raises questions about justice, truth, forgiveness,
redemption, and the ability of brutalized and brutalizing individuals to subsequently coexist
in harmony.
