DATE: May 4, 2004 TIME: 7:00 PM
ACTIVITY: Diversity Book Talk -- Luis Alberto Urrea LOCATION: UW Kane 110
DESCRIPTION: University of Washington The Graduate School Graduate Opportunities and Minority Achievement Program (GO-MAP). Presents "The Diversity Book Talk Series Spring 2004." The UW Graduate Opportunities & Minority Achievement Program (GO-MAP) invites you to our Diversity Book Talk Series, which brings authors of color, as well as White authors who write on race, diversity, and multicultural issues, to the University of Washington campus to read and discuss their work. The Devil's Highway: (A True Story), by Luis Alberto Urrea. Urrea, winner of the American Book Award and member of the Latino Literature Hall of Fame, will read from, discuss, and sign his new book. Introduction by Urrea^Òs good friend and fellow author, Sherman Alexie, UW American Ethnic Studies professor. The true story of a dangerous place, those willing to risk everything to cross, and those determined to rescue the living and the dead at all costs. In May 2001, a group of 26 men attempted to cross the Mexican border into the desert of southern Arizona, through the deadliest region of the continent, the Devil's Highway. These men -- fathers and sons, brothers and strangers -- entered a desert so harsh and desolate that even the Border Patrol is afraid to travel through it. Nights are frigid and days are so hot that dead bodies naturally mummify within minutes. Only 12 men came back out. Now Luis Urrea, who has won multiple awards for his writing about the border, tells the story of this modern, real-life adventure through a hellish no-man's-land where desperate dreams clash with the nearly invincible odds against survival. The Devil's Highway is spectacularly written and as blazingly brilliant as the desert sun, with the bite of a chupacabra. Admission is FREE and open to the public. Seating is limited, so please arrive early! Books will be available for purchase after the reading, thanks to Kim Ricketts/ Events Books. Book signing to follow Urrea's presentation. ACTIVITY: Lecture, Dr Delia Aguilar LOCATION: Parrington Hall, The Commons room
DESCRIPTION: The Seattle Chapter of Gabriela Network invites you to an enriching and powerful dialogue with Dr. Delia Aguilar to discuss the effects of globalization on women. Dr. Aguilar's presentation will educate students and community members to understand the impact of public and international policy amidst the intersecting issues of gender, third world poverty, labor and globalization. The discussion helps challenge leaders to engage in critical dialogue with experts that increases and diversifies their knowledge base of the need for improved public policy and service in the areas of labor, gender and globalization. Dr. Aguilar will also talk about the ways in which female diaspora can be understood only in the context of the mantras of globalization: neoliberalism, deregulation, and privatization. She will also talk about what the hiring of women of color as domestics in this country implies for feminism and for North/South relations of power. Dr. Aguilar is a scholar in women's and ethnic studies. She has published works on feminism, Philippine women's issues, and globalization. Dr. Aguilar has taught at universities in the United States and the Philippines. CONTACT NAME: Donna Denina

Our goal is to reduce poverty by working to create sustainable solutions that increase self-sufficiency to African refugees and immigrants as they resettle in Washington state.
