DESCRIPTION: "Uncle tom: deconstructed", a ritual play, examines and demonstrates how blackface minstrelsy is the direct predecessor to current racist stereotypes, stereotypes that are seared into our universal consciousness and feed both external and internal judgements.

ACTIVITY: John Trudell Lecture and Reception LOCATION: Kane Hall 220 / Walker-Ames
DESCRIPTION: Highly controversial John Trudell, former co-chairman and national spokesman of the American Indian Movement, will join the University of Washington, Ethnic Cultural Center to address the current state of American Indian Activism and Spirituality. Tragic events in 1979 changed Trudell^Òs life forever. His wife, three children and mother-in-law were killed in a house fire, in Duck Valley, Nevada. Some believe the incident was an direct retribution for John^Òs involvement of burning the American Flag on the steps of the FBI headquarters, just 24 hours earlier. Twenty ^Öfour years later, John continues to hearten the American Indian Movement and inspire others through political activism, music and spirituality.
