Interim Wireless Deployment
Overview
Departments may identify a requirement for wireless networking that is:
- Sufficiently urgent, due to programmatic needs, that the Department can not wait for full wireless deployment in their facility per UWI institutional priorities and schedule
- Limited in scope to 1-2 classrooms, lab spaces, conference rooms, or small office areas
In such cases, Departments may employ departmentally (locally) provided funds to expedite wireless deployment in specific spaces they designate. Departments may not request central monies to fund interim wireless deployment requests.
The interim wireless deployment process is intended to address support for these immediate, one-time departmental needs for wireless as a stopgap until full building wireless deployment is scheduled through the UW Wireless Initiative. Interim deployments shall be limited in scope and quantity to avoid impact to UWI deployment schedules and resources.
Interim Wireless Deployment Scenarios
Quick Deployment
- Where feasible, wireless technology will be deployed in the most expeditious and cost effective manner possible, e.g. WAP installed using an existing Ethernet jack or in an existing UW Technology communications closet.
- While the Department will be assessed a nominal one-time installation charge of $60.00 per WAP, most other standard Wireless Design, Infrastructure, and Installation costs will be waived
-
To qualify for Quick Deployment the following site
conditions are required:
- Existing infrastructure is available, i.e. WAP can be installed using existing Ethernet cable jack or in a UW Technology communications closet
- Physical security of the wireless equipment can be reasonably assured
Standard Deployment
- Where it is not feasible to utilize the above quick deployment methodology, wireless deployment will follow standard ceiling- or wall-mounted installation procedures
- Most standard Wireless Design, Infrastructure, and Installation costs will apply and will be charged to the Department's budget
- UW Technology and the UWI team may choose to master plan the wireless network design for a whole floor or building in order to ensure that placement of WAPs conforms to the needs of the entire facility, though deployment of infrastructure and technology will be completed only in the requested areas
Interim Wireless Request Process
-
Interim wireless deployments will be managed through a
parallel process outside the scope and schedule of the
UWI (though tracked by the UWI team):
- Department submits request to customercare@u.washington.edu
- UW Technology Infrastructure Project Manager assigned
- Wireless design and site survey completed by UW Technology Contractor or Staff
- Infrastructure design and site survey completed by Facilities Services (UW Shops)
- Infrastructure/hazmat (UW Shops) and wireless installation (UW Technology) quotes provided and approved by Department
- Wireless deployment scheduled and completed per Departmental requirements and UW Technology/Shops implementation timelines
