New Feature for Reply

Q: I'm using Pine 4 on Homer. When I reply to an email message, I'm now asked if I want to include the original message in Reply (using " >"). What does that new part in the parentheses mean?

A: When you type R (Reply) to respond to an email message and want to include the original message in your reply, Pine on the Uniform Access systems is configured to allow you to change what is called the "reply indent string." These are the characters or symbols (the default is " >") that precede each line of the original message text to set it off from your reply.

You may find using different indent symbols (initials or numbers) helpful if you are working collaboratively by email.

To use a different indent string (for example, #), do the following when at that prompt:

  1. Press <Control> R (Edit Indent String).

  2. Delete the " >".

  3. Type your desired prefix and press <Return>.

You are asked: Include original message in Reply (using "#")? Type Y (Yes).

You can also turn this feature off. From the Pine Main Menu, type S (Setup), C (Config), scroll down to "enable-reply-indent-string-editing" and type X (Set/Unset) and E (Exit).
