Behind the Screens

Password sniffer attacks on UW local area networks are continuing and were especially high in the last year, with dozens of reports in 1997 affecting over a thousand people on campus. Dave Dittrich, who works with systems administrators when their local networks are hit, explains how sniffers work and steps that you can take to help safeguard yourself and the systems you use.

It is the login sequence, which occurs at the start of every session, that sniffers look for because it contains your password.
