How to Make a Reference Quicktime Movie
Overview
To incorporate a QuickTime Streaming movie into your Web site, you should use a "reference movie"--"refmovie" for short. A reference movie helps in many ways:
- they help Web browsers to launch the QuickTime Plug-in
- they tell the QuickTime Plug-in where to find your QuickTime Streaming movie
- they tell the QuickTime Plug-in about alternate data rate movies
Instructions for MakeRefMovie
To create a reference movie:

Download and install Apple's MakeRefMovie tool (listed under Webmaster tools).

Open the MakeRefMovie application. A "Save as" dialog should ask you for a working filename.

Enter a filename, making sure to use a .mov filename extension. Keep in mind that you are creating a refmovie. You may want to add "ref" to the filename .

Click the Movie menu.

Select Add URL.

In the box, type the URL address of your QuickTime Streaming movie. For example:
rtsp://qtmedia.type.washington.edu/userid/hinted.mov
Substitute type and userid appropriately, refering to the QuickTime URL Reference for help.

Press Enter.

If you have any alternate data rate movies, repeat steps 4, 5 and 6 for each.

To save your reference movie, click the File menu and select Save.

Quit MakeRefMovie.
Now you're ready to link or embed this reference movie into a Web page.
