About Streaming Media Services

Overview

UW Technology provides streaming media services for UW students, staff, faculty, courses and departments. Streaming services are provided by RealNetworks' Helix Universal Server (version 9.0.8) which supports RealMedia, QuickTime, and single bitrate Windows Media formats. Multibitrate Windows Media content is not supported by the Helix Universal Server. Streaming media services are intended for real-time, on demand streaming of stored content; live streaming, or webcasting, is not currently supported.

Note

Creating on-demand context can often result in having excessively large files to move around and store. UW Technology's Streaming Media Services provide you with an additional 1 Gigabyte of disk space set up exclusively for your streaming media content.

Documentation

Introductory and background information is available online at UW Technology's Streaming Media Services Web site. Additional links to internal and external sites are provided to assist users with content creation, delivery concepts, and streaming technologies.
