Creating a MyUW.net Home Page

The MyUW.net Web Server is available to MyUW.net subscribers for the publication of materials on the web. If you are a current subscriber, these instructions can help you get started:

Instructions

Follow these four steps to create a home page for your Web site:

1. Activate Web Publishing

Web publishing is a service tied to your UW NetID and shell.MyUW.net account. The MyUW.net Web Server uses space on your shell account to store your Web pages.

To activate Web publishing:

  1. Get your MyUW.net account.
  2. Go to Manage Your UW NetID Resources and...
    1. Login with your UW NetID and password.
    2. Click the Change your services tab.
    3. Check the box for MyUW.net Web Publishing in the list of services that are off.
    4. Click the Continue button.
    5. Follow the instructions.
    6. Write down the URL address for your home page.

Activating Web publishing creates your Web directory. A shortcut called public_html is also created on your shell.MyUW.net account to make it easier to put files in your Web directory. Putting a file in public_html is the same as putting it in your Web directory. You can put any file in your Web directory and it will be accessible via the MyUW.net Web Server.

2. Compose a Home Page

You have three options for composing a home page:

Note: if you compose your home page by hand or with an HTML authoring tool, save the file as index.html (or index.htm). This is the filename associated with your home page.

3. Move Your Home Page to Your Web Directory

If you need to manually upload your home page to your Web directory, use a secure file transfer program, such as SSH SFTP (Microsoft Windows) or Fetch (Macintosh). Both SSH SFTP and Fetch are available for free in the UWICK software distribution. You will find your Web directory (public_html) by connecting your file transfer program to shell.MyUW.net.

4. Open Your Home Page

Once your home page is in your Web directory, you and others can view it by opening your home page address in a Web browser. The URL depends on your UW NetID:

http://home.MyUW.net/UWNetID/

Substitute UWNetID appropriately.

Refer to the UW Web Server URL Reference for further explanation of your home page URL.
