Publishing a GoLive Web Site with Fetch (Macintosh)

Summary

This document describes how to use Fetch 4 to publish a Web site developed in Adobe GoLive for Macintosh. Step-by-step instructions are provided to help you locate your site's files on your local hard drive and then transfer them to your account's Web directory using a mirroring operation in Fetch. This document concludes with a recommended way to repeat this process, making it easy to update your Web site each time you make modifications to it in GoLive.

Instructions

To publish your GoLive site with Fetch:

  1. Make sure you have Fetch version 4 or later installed. It is available for download as a component of the UW Internet Connectivity Kit.

  2. Start Adobe GoLive.

  3. Click the File menu and select Open... to open your site.

  4. Click the Site menu and select Settings...

    Site Menu

The Site Settings dialogue box for your site will appear.

  5. Select FTP & WebDAV Server from the list on the left. Make sure the FTP Server and WebDAV Server settings are blank. Leaving these settings blank ensures that you do not accidentally upload your site with GoLive's unsecure file transfer function.

  6. Click the OK button to save the settings for your site.

  7. Start Fetch 4 and connect to Homer, Dante, or shell.myuw.net as you would normally.

  8. Double-click on the folder public_html to open it. This selects your Web directory as the remote folder for file transfers.

  9. Click the Remote menu and select Mirror Folder...

    Fetch Remote Menu

The Mirror dialogue box will appear. Since you selected your Web directory in the previous step, it is already displayed on the right.

  10. Click the left drop-down list Choose Folder or Dir... and select Local Folder. A Choose a Folder dialogue box will appear. Use it to locate the folder where your GoLive site is stored on your hard drive. Select this folder and click Choose.

To publish your entire site (i.e. send all site files to your account's Web directory) click the right arrow button and click OK. Fetch will transfer all the files to your Web directory.

Note: you also can retrieve your entire site (i.e. get all site files from your site's Web directory) by clicking the left arrow. Warning: this will overwrite the files in the local folder with those from your account's Web directory.

  11. (Recommended) Click the Save... button to create and name a Fetch shortcut for these mirror settings. This will allow you to use the shortcut, rather than these instructions, the next time you want to update your Web site.

  12. You're done! Use a Web browser to open your updated Web site in order to verify that the mirroring operation was successful.
