Web Development Environments (Vergil, Ovid, & Socrates)

Web Development Environments Overview

Dante, Homer, and Shell.MyUW.net have separate areas for Web development, called Vergil, Ovid, and Socrates, respectively. These Web development environments provide tools (special commands, log file analyzers, compilers, etc.) that are not otherwise available on the student, staff, and MyUW.net serers.

Logging In

To log into your Web development environment, simply use a shell client such as TeraTerm or SSH to connect to vergil.u.washington.edu (for Dante), ovid.u.washington.edu (for Homer), or socrates.myuw.net (for MyUW.net).

You can also access your Web environment from Dante, Homer, or Shell.MyUW.net in the following manner:

  1. Login to your Dante, Homer, or Shell.MyUW.net account.
  2. Press the O key for Other.
  3. Press the W key to drop into the Web development environment.

Using the Web Development Environments

Vergil, Ovid, and Socrates are Unix environments, driven by entering Unix commands at a prompt (vergil%, ovid% or socrates%). To learn more about Unix commands, see Using Unix on Uniform Access Computers.

Vergil, Ovid, and Socrates are also suitable for running do-it-yourself servers. If you intend to use them for this purpose, please review these guidelines first.

Logging Out

When you're done using the Web development environment, enter exit at the prompt to log out.
