How to Log Out of a Weblogin Session

Overview

The UW Weblogin service establishes a login session that lasts eight hours or until you exit your Web browser. This Weblogin session allows you to go about your work without repeated requests to enter your UW NetID and password. However, if you walk away from your computer without properly logging out, someone else can access your personal information and interact with Web sites as if they were you.

Instructions

To protect your privacy and prevent unauthorized use of your UW NetID, you must completely exit your Web browser to log out of your Weblogin session.

Platform Web Browser How to Completely Exit
Microsoft Windows Internet Explorer Close all Internet Explorer windows. To do so, either click each window's close box or on the File menu select Close (shortcut key Ctrl+W). You must do this for each and every Internet Explorer window.
Netscape On the File menu select Exit (shortcut key Ctrl+Q).
Macintosh Internet Explorer On the File menu select Quit (shortcut key Command+Q). Also, if either Outlook Express or Entourage is open, you must quit it too.
Netscape On the File menu select Quit (shortcut key Command+Q).
Unix Netscape On the File menu select Exit (shortcut key Alt+Q).

Explanation

The UW Weblogin service requires you to completely exit your Web browser in order to log out because it is the only reliable way to clear the cookies used to maintain your Weblogin session.

After checking your UW NetID and password, the Weblogin service sets non-persistent cookies in your Web browser's cookie cache. Non-persistent means they are stored in memory only, not on disk. When you completely close your Web browser this memory is cleared, including the cookies used to maintain your Weblogin session.

Please send email to help@u.washington.edu if you have any questions about logging out of the UW Weblogin service.
