How to Subscribe to UW Exchange

If you are interested in using UW Exchange, contact your department's IT support staff.

A department can arrange for UW Exchange services in two ways:

Fees

The UW Exchange service will be funded on a fee-based, cost-recovery basis. The fees for Exchange are:

These amounts may be refined over the next several months as costs and economies of scale are identified. However, it is expected that the $8 per mailbox per month fee will be in place until at least June of 2009. Depending on the level of service required by your department, additional fees might apply for migration and support. Also, certain licensing costs might apply.

These fees apply for non-Nebula subscribers. If your department subscribes through Nebula, Nebula fees apply. Nebula fees are published on the Nebula site.

Licensing

Several licenses must be provided for each user:

Nebula Supported UW Exchange Users

If Nebula supplies your UW Exchange services, Nebula will handle all of the licensing requirements.

Departmentally Supported UW Exchange Users

UW Exchange requires one of the following two options for Microsoft Client Access Licenses (CALs):

You can obtain Microsoft Client Access Licenses through the UW's Microsoft Campus Agreement or the Microsoft Select Agreement:

Why are both the Standard and the Enterprise CALs required for UW Exchange?

You need the Standard CAL to get the base features of Exchange. However, to provide the most reliable and secure service to our customers, UW Technology implemented the Forefront Security for Exchange product for enhanced anti-virus and anti-spam, and the Enterprise CAL is required for Forefront Security. The Enterprise CAL also supports Unified Messaging, an exciting add-on to the UW Exchange Service that UW Technology is actively planning. More details on the Unified Messaging offering will be coming soon.

The following table shows what groups of features are supported by each license. The shaded region shows the required licensing for the features in the current UW Exchange offering. The Microsoft Enterprise CAL Suite is the best value because it satisfies the requirements for all planned future collaborative applications and features, including  Exchange Unified Messaging.
