XML Applications

Besides being the basis of many computer languages, XML plays many roles in academia. The Web is only one environment within which XML is already an important tool.

The following are some schemas already in use here at the UW and elsewhere in academia:

• Encoded Archival Description - In use in UW Libraries
• Text Encoding Initiative - Multi-language documents
• XHTML - Recommended standard for pages in the UW Home Page site
• Rich Site Summary (RSS) - Useful standard for making specific pages within a site available, such as news stories.
• Resource Description Framework - Supports exchange of knowledge on the Web about information collections
• XML-RPC - Cross platform distributed computing.
• BizTalk - An XML based approach to communication between businesses.
