Addresses on the Web (URLs)

Each separate page accessible on the Web has a unique address, called a Uniform Resource Locator (URL). Much like we have a standardized way to write an address on an envelope, URLs have a specific syntax.

URL Syntax Example

http://info.cern.ch:80/default.html

http:
Type of server. URLs can specify many different kinds of servers, including the following:
  • HTTP servers
  • Anonymous FTP servers
  • Netnews servers
  • Gopher servers
  • telnet sessions
info.cern.ch
Internet address of computer on which the server is operating.
:80
Port number
default.html
Directory and file name
