Addresses on the Web (URLs)
Each separate page accessible on the Web has a unique address, called a Uniform Resource Locator (URL). Much like we have a standardized way to write an address on an envelope, URLs have a specific syntax.
URL Syntax Example
http://info.cern.ch:80/default.html

- Type of server. URLs can specify many different kinds of servers, including the following:
- HTTP servers
- Anonymous FTP servers
- Netnews servers
- Gopher servers
- telnet sessions
- info.cern.ch
- Internet address of computer on which the server is operating.
- :80
- Port number
- default.html
- Directory and file name
