PC-Pine 4 stores user information in a file called PINERC. This file
is accessed by PC-Pine no matter if it is installed in the same directory
or not. For multiple people trying to use PC-Pine on the same computer,
this can be a problem.
In order to enable multiple users in PC-Pine 4, you must first
enable user profiles in Windows:
- Go to the Control Panel and open the Passwords control
panel.
- Click on the User Profiles tab.
- Then choose "Users can customize their preferences and desktop
settings" and click OK.
- Log in to Windows as a new user.
- Reinstall PC-Pine to the same directory in which it is already
installed.
- When asked if you wish to overwrite the current PINERC file, click
No.
- Select a new location for this user's PINERC settings file.
- Finish the installation of PC-Pine. Note: You do not need write
privileges to the PC-Pine installation directory, as only files that need
to be updated are copied.
If you wish to have multiple PC-Pine users in Windows 95/98 and
you are not using User Profiles, you will need to create shortcuts to
multiple installations of PC-Pine:
- Install PC-Pine.
- Open your PC-Pine folder (C:\Program Files\UWICK\PC-Pine).
Right click on the PINERC file and select Rename. Change the name
to "PINERC-user" where user is replaced with your UW
NetID.
- Create a new icon on the desktop (or wherever you would like it) by
right-clicking on the desktop and selecting New -> Shortcut.
In the Command Line box, type:
"C: Program Files\UWICK\PC-Pine\pine.exe" -p
PINERC-user
where user is replaced with your UW NetID.
- Click Next, fill in a name (such as user's PC-Pine) in the name box,
and click Finish.
- Repeat steps 1-4 for multiple users.
